GUIDE

YouTube Chapters Not Working? Check These Things First

A practical troubleshooting order for manual and automatic YouTube chapters.

Short Answer

For manual chapters, start at 0:00, use at least three timestamps in ascending order, keep each chapter at least 10 seconds long, give every timestamp a title, and save the list in the video description.

Use This Troubleshooting Order

1. First timestamp starts at 0:00
2. At least three timestamps
3. Timestamps in ascending order
4. Every chapter is at least 10 seconds
5. Every timestamp has a title
6. The list is saved in the description
7. Manual and automatic chapters are not being confused
8. Feature access is available

1. Make Sure the First Timestamp Is 0:00

If the main topic starts later, add a chapter for the opening. It does not have to be called Introduction.

Correct:
0:00 Introduction
1:25 Setup
4:40 Main Tutorial
Incorrect:
0:25 Introduction
1:25 Setup
4:40 Main Tutorial

2. Check That You Have at Least Three Timestamps

Too short:
0:00 Introduction
5:30 Main Topic
Valid structure:
0:00 Introduction
2:10 Setup
5:30 Main Topic

3. Put the Timestamps in Ascending Order

Wrong:
0:00 Introduction
6:30 Demo
3:20 Setup
Correct:
0:00 Introduction
3:20 Setup
6:30 Demo

4. Check the Length of Every Chapter

YouTube currently says each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Do not create a chapter for every visual change or short transition.

Too close:
0:00 Intro
0:06 Logo
0:09 Welcome
0:25 Main Topic
Better:
0:00 Introduction
0:25 Main Topic
2:40 First Example

5. Give Every Timestamp a Useful Title

Avoid vague labels such as Part 1, Next, or More when you can describe the section directly.

0:00 Introduction
2:15 Project Setup
5:40 Main Tutorial
9:20 Final Result

6. Make Sure the Chapters Are in the Video Description

Manual chapters are added through the video Description field in YouTube Studio. Paste the timestamp-and-title list there and save the video.

YouTube Studio
→ Content
→ Select video
→ Description
→ Add timestamps + titles
→ Save

7. Make Sure You Actually Saved the Changes

01

Edit the description

Add or correct the chapter list in YouTube Studio.

02

Save the video

Do not rely only on the editor preview.

03

Open the public video

Check the published page and click several timestamps.

8. Check Whether the Timestamps Are Actually Correct

A list can be correctly formatted and still send viewers to the wrong moment. Open the video, find the real section start, correct the timestamp, save again, and test it.

Manual Chapters vs Automatic Chapters

Manual chapters are written in the description and give you control over timestamps, titles, and section boundaries. Automatic chapters are generated by YouTube for eligible videos. Manually entered chapters override automatically generated chapters.

Automatic Chapters Are Enabled but Nothing Appears

Turning on automatic chapters does not guarantee that every eligible video receives them. Availability can depend on feature access, strikes, and content eligibility. If you need predictable boundaries, use manual chapters.

No. Automatic chapters are not guaranteed for every video.

What tool can help me prepare the list?

Use the Chapter Generator to organize, validate, and copy a chapter list before pasting it into YouTube Studio.
